The World Health Organization admits that COVID-19 vaccines will be modified every year, like anti-influenza vaccines, depending on the decrease in their effectiveness due to the emergence of new strains.
At this stage, WHO cannot predict the emergence of a new option, against which existing drugs will be powerless, but it is quite possible, admits Sumya Swaminathan, the organization’s chief scientist.
According to TASS, referring to the words of the expert, the developers are studying the possibility of modifying the vaccine in order to minimize the threat of possible future variants of the coronavirus. Swaminathan notes:
“Fortunately, the vaccines that have been approved so far are still effective against the options we’ve seen so far. WHO is working with developers, scientists and regulators on how these (modified) vaccines can be quickly approved. “
