Germany: Greek immigrant dies at police station

The death of 24-year-old Greek Georgios Zantiotis at a police station in Wuppertal, Germany, has caused shock and outrage around the world.

The young man was brutally abused during his arrest by the German police. The screams of his sister, who recorded the horrific incident on her mobile phone, are shocking as audiovisual material travels across the internet.

This documentary video shows a group of police officers throwing Georgios Zantiotis to the ground and using violence against him in an attempt to immobilize him.

24 hours after this scene, the German authorities announced his death, stating that nothing reprehensible had been done against the Greek.

They claim that the young man was arrested outside a nightclub because, they say, he attacked his sister and a police woman, and at the same time they talk about drugs.

On social networks, it is reported that the deceased had recently undergone surgery and died due to violence from the German police.

Build: “After a quarrel between a brother and sister, a 25-year-old man dies in detention.”

Meanwhile, the German newspaper Bild refers to the news, which became known only yesterday (7/11), and, according to the publication, it concerns a man of Greek descent who died on November 1 in Wuppertal (West Germany) while in police custody.

According to the newspaper, citing an announcement by the prosecutor’s office in the case, the 25-year-old was in a taxi with his 34-year-old sister when they had a fight, as a result of which she was injured.

When the taxi driver managed to inform the patrol police, the guy resisted, easily wounding two of them, and only with the help of police reinforcements, they managed to detain him and take him to the police station. There he underwent a medical examination, which showed that he was under the influence of drugs.

During the examination, the young man lost consciousness, and the doctor tried in vain to bring him back to life.

According to the authorities yesterday, the forensic examination ruled out the possibility that anyone could be held responsible for the death of the young man, since the data relate to an illness he suffered from and which, combined with drug use, led to his death.

The authorities are not investigating the allegations, but the Wuppertal prosecutor’s office is looking for another unidentified person who allegedly supplied the young man with drugs.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “Wuppertal – 25-year-old man dies in police custody”

The corresponding publication FAZ indicates that the Wuppertal prosecutor’s office in their announcements did not explain why this case became known a few days later, when the media learned about it. In a German city, citizens hold rallies to protest the death of a 24-year-old boy

KKE: The circumstances of the death of a Greek immigrant in Wuppert must be clarified immediately.

“The death of a 24-year-old Greek fast food worker who was detained at the Wuppertal police station raises many questions. German police are currently reluctant to comment on the circumstances of the young Greek’s death, denying the family the opportunity to see the body of a relative. whether an autopsy was carried out. The obstacles created raise serious suspicions of covering up the events that led to the death of the young man. ”

“At the same time, both the video published and the live evidence at the time of his arrest demonstrate the intensity of authoritarianism and state violence by the German police. Immigrants are regularly subjected to harsh and racist treatment by the police and fascist gangs, and their cases are quickly and easily shelved, accusing the victims themselves of criminal and dangerous behavior to public safety. Those who protest, those who fight, those who declare and react to their policies are considered “criminals.”

After all, it is no coincidence that the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has recently been promoting a reactionary anti-assembly law. The policy of all bourgeois governments is a policy of strengthening repressive mechanisms, authoritarianism, dossiers. Their goal is to intimidate strikes and popular freedoms that are left to create obedient workers. They seek to reduce the number of demonstrations and abolish the right to strike, ”the statement said.

“It is significant that, although the Greek authorities were informed from the first moment of his death, and despite the fact that there was a video publication of the inhuman treatment of the Greek immigrant by the police, five days later they did not even react in any way. The Greek government is obliged to immediately ask the German government explain the real causes and circumstances of his death, and condemn the ill-treatment of him. We demand that the circumstances of the death of the young immigrant be immediately clarified and that responsibilities be assigned where they exist. “
