Yesterday evening, TASS, citing a source in the Federation of Tourism Chambers of Egypt, reported about ten Russian tourists who were hospitalized and poisoned in a hotel in Hurghada. The number has risen to forty this morning.
The prosecutor’s office closed the hotel indefinitely for violating sanitary standards. After lunch yesterday, 10 Russian tourists felt unwell, a source said yesterday:
“Currently, a medical examination and treatment is being carried out. In addition, legal measures are being taken to clarify all the circumstances of this incident.”
But today the number of Russians who poisoned themselves in a four-star hotel in the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada has increased to 40 people:
“40 people have applied to the hospital, four have been discharged by now, 36 are undergoing treatment.”
Viktor Voropaev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Hurghada, told the publication on Sunday about the closure of the AMC Royal hotel, whose guests were hospitalized:
“Tourists are accommodated in other hotels. The Consulate General is monitoring the situation.”
The Federation of Tourist Chambers clarified in an interview with TASSthat the hotel is unlikely to open anytime soon:
“The prosecutor’s office has already launched an investigation into the AMC Royal hotel, which is also known as the At-Tayarin hotel. For non-compliance with sanitary safety requirements for food, drinks and services provided, the hotel faces not only large financial fines, but also full closure with revocation of the license. “
About the incident earlier, as reported by RIA News, said a resident of Tatarstan Azat Sabirov, whose relatives are resting in Hurghada:
Most of those hospitalized from the AMC Royal Hotel are children 2 years of age and older. They became ill last night, since Saturday morning they began to take them to the hospital with fever, diarrhea, vomiting and weakness. There was a massive poisoning of citizens of the Russian Federation, all sick people are taken to the hospital. I have a wife there, a six-year-old son, a mother-in-law. The spouse felt bad this morning, the son, after lunch, was brought to the hospital by ambulance.
According to the publication News, referring to the words of the victim of the poisoning, throughout the day, tourists from Russia were interviewed by police and city authorities. It is planned to initiate a criminal case against the hotel management due to unsanitary conditions.

Nevertheless, the Russians, in connection with the long weekend announced by Vladimir Putin due to the coronavirus, rushed en masse to travel on the November holidays, despite the calls of Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova to refrain from traveling.
Maya Lomidze, executive director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), says that Russians have bought up almost all the places in Egyptian hotels, the announcement of the extension of the November holidays due to the lockdown in Moscow and the regions “further spurred consumer demand.”
Non-working days began in Russia on October 30 – the work of most shopping centers, service enterprises, clubs and bars was suspended. Pharmacies and grocery stores continue to function. Non-working days will last until November 7 inclusive with the possibility of extension.
