The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, according to preliminary data, is starting the procedure for the construction of an underwater tunnel that will connect Lefkada with Etoloakarnania.
The Lefkada Underwater Tunnel is a large-scale project that is believed to give a significant boost to the tourism industry, which has been in high demand in recent years.
After 5 years of inactivity, the project was taken up again, as the competent ministry initiated the procedure for renewing the work plan and appointed a technical consultant. If all goes well, it is possible that the € 50 million project will be handed over to the contractor within the next year.
Overall, and based on the original design, this is a 3 km project, of which 1.1 km will be underwater. It is also planned to expand the existing transport links.
Equally important is the construction of the Amvrakia Odos highway, which is expected in 2023. Thus, in combination with the future underwater tunnel, the Athens-Lefkada distance can be covered in about 3 hours.
