Chios: boat with migrants sank, four children found dead

A boat carrying migrants sank in the sea area southeast of Chios, and a major Coast Guard operation is underway. There were 27 foreigners on board, 20 were rescued. The bodies of four children were found in the sea, one was missing.

Notis Mitarakis, Greek Minister of Migration, posted a video and photo of the tragedy on Twitter, writing:

“These trips should never take place. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the Greek Coast Guard, four children between the ages of 3 and 14 were recovered dead, 1 person was missing, and 22 were rescued and treated on land. ”

In his new post, he continued blaming Turkey:

“The Turkish authorities must do more. This is the reality of the exploitation of immigrants by criminal gangs in the Aegean Sea. Unscrupulous human traffickers endanger lives in heavily loaded, unnavigable boats. ”

According to the Coast Guard, AMPE reports that the operation involves two naval vessels, a Super Puma helicopter, a Greek army helicopter, a NATO warship, three fishing vessels and three floating ships. In the area of the shipwreck, the wind strength is from 5 to 6 on the Beaufort scale.
