Fofi Gennimata dies at 56 after long battle with cancer

Condolences from the Greek political world and from abroad come as the funeral procedures for KINAL leader Fofi Gennimat are being prepared. The Prime Minister declared October 27, his funeral day, a national day of mourning.

The 56-year-old socialist politician who has lost a long battle with cancer will be buried on Wednesday afternoon in the First Cemetery in Athens. Her body will lie in the church from 10 am, and the funeral service is scheduled for 2 pm.

The Greek Parliament decided to suspend its meetings to honor the memory of the deceased politician. A minute of silence was honored in parliament an hour after her death was announced on Monday. A bouquet of white roses was laid on the chair where the deputy and leader of the Movement for Change sat at the plenary session of the parliament.

Having recovered from the shock of sudden death, the state and political leadership of the country began to express condolences.

Mitsotakis was informed of Gennimata’s death upon arriving in Saudi Arabia for a two-day official visit. He has changed his schedule and will return to Athens on Tuesday evening. His tour to the Dodecanese Islands has been postponed to a later date.

Condolences were expressed by all political leaders, as well as former prime ministers and deputies.

Fofi Gennimata, leader of the Greek party Movement for Change (KINAL-PASOK) passed away at 12:04 pm on Monday at the Evangeliasmos Metropolitan Hospital. Gennimata has been battling cancer for over a decade and was hospitalized two weeks ago.

On Monday morning, Greek media reported that her health condition had deteriorated. Reportedly that during the night she had had ischemic liver shock. Despite the efforts of the doctors, her health condition was irreversible.

Gennimata was hospitalized on October 11 with intestinal obstruction and recurrence of primary cancer. According to media reports, she was found to have multiple abdominal metastases.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.

The tragedy is that both of her parents also died of cancer. Her father, Giorgos Gennimatas, was the founder of PASOK and, in his capacity as minister, overhauled the Greek health system.

The political world, but also society, regardless of political ideologies, is shocked by the death of this dynamic woman. Although her state of health was more or less known, no one could believe such a sudden death.

She has been active in politics since attending university and has been elected as the leader of KINAL / PASOK since 2014. She was the only woman to ever lead the Socialist Party in Greece.

Six candidates for the leadership of KINAL after she announced about their retirement from politics, are only men.
