Former Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou officially announced his candidacy for the post of leader of the Movement for Change (KINAL / PASOK) on Wednesday evening.
The former PASOK leader said in a video message: “We need new changes for the citizens and the country,” and the party must once again play a leading role in political events. “
The former prime minister, who left his post with a scandal, added that the Democratic Progressive Party (meaning KINAL after Fofi Gennimat) must keep up with other progressive powers in Europe and in the world, which are dynamically returning.
“I will do my best to restore greatness and strength to our party and be at the forefront of events again,” he said, urging all democratic and progressive citizens to participate and celebrate democracy, ”he said in a short statement.

After Papandreou joined the KINAL leadership race, the number of candidates rose to seven.
Other candidates are: Pavlos Gerulanos, Pavlos Christides, Haris Kastanidis, Andreas Loverdos, Nikos Androulakis and Vasilis Kegeroglu. The latter indicated that he could refuse to participate if the former prime minister took part in the race.
Candidacy is definitely a risky move for the 69-year-old Papandreou, who was practically “ousted” from the post of Prime Minister by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and with help some high-ranking PASOK politicians, in November 2011, when he offered them a referendum where the Greeks must decide how to solve the debt problem.
