Updated requirements for obtaining or renewing a Greek passport

Greece has updated the requirements for issuing or renewing a Greek passport, and a corresponding draft presidential decree was submitted to the Council of State for legislative consideration on Monday.

In particular, citizens cannot be provided with a new or renewed passport if they have ever been convicted of receiving a false certificate of any type, false testimony, illegal use or possession of a genuine passport, or have been convicted of illegal trade in documents.

Other criminal offenses that block the issuance of passports include, but are not limited to, forging documents, travel bans or cases pending a final verdict.

Passports can now also be issued to persons pending court cases when hospitalization abroad is required or a spouse or second-degree relative living abroad has died.
