According to the ΤΡΑΙΝΟΣΕ management, from January 2022, trains on the Athens-Thessaloniki route will overcome the speed barrier of 160 km / h, as five new ETR470 cars are expected to be launched.
The first high-speed train route ETR470, which will connect Thessaloniki with Athens, is expected to take place in mid-January 2022. The five ETR470 type wagons were expected to be gradually launched between Thessaloniki and Athens starting in March 2021, but then the launch was postponed to June. Due to the lack of the necessary certification, three train cars, which had already arrived in Greece by that time, remained “idle” at the TRAINOSE depot (Menemeni, Thessaloniki). Now the “misadventures” that have been going on for several months are coming to an end, as the installation of the necessary mechanisms (αμμοδιασπορέων) finally makes it possible to start routes from the beginning of 2022.

Many years before Strel entered the routes
However, as explained by Mr. Lo Bosco, the ETR470 does not belong to the family of trains, which are characterized as “Strela” (high-speed express train). The launch of the first trains of this family “will require many more years of work with the cooperation of the Greek government and Ferrovie dello stato (FSI),” said the president of TRAINOSE, explaining that in order to develop such speeds on the Greek railway network, it is necessary to first complete the modernization of the “priority lines” and to resume railway communication with Sofia.
