A 69-year-old shepherd who went missing near a village in southern Evia on Thursday evening was found dead, the fire department said Friday afternoon.
According to a press release, the man was found unconscious in a riverbed in the Tsakayoy region of southern Evia.
Calling the fire department yesterday, at about 22:00, the man said that a stormy stream of water carried him away in a car. An alarm was announced in the Mesochoria area. The publication EVIMA reports that rescuers found the door and other parts of the car today between Tsakai and Mesochoria districts.
The rescue operation was attended by 15 firefighters in 5 vehicles, a fire brigade helicopter and 2 vehicles with special equipment from the volunteers of the Evia Rescue Team – SAR 312, from Aliveri, Periklis Kulkuvinis, the commander of the fire brigade of Chalkida, is also located there. Speaking to evima.gr, Mayor Karistos Lefteris said before the wreckage of the car was found:
“With the first rays of the sun, searches continue, which are in full swing, we are with the machines of the municipality and the region in disputed points. The 69-year-old man’s car has not yet been found. It was the first time in our municipality that so much water fell in a few hours. ”
Later, the rescue service reported that the body of the drowned shepherd had been found.
It is noted that the flooding of the river in Nea Stira has led to a cessation of traffic on the road leading to the area. It is also reported that firefighters evacuated residents of 8 flooded houses in this village.
