KINAL leader Fofi Gennimata withdrew from the race for health reasons

Fofi Gennimata, leader of the socialist opposition Movement for Change (KINAL / PASOK), announced on Tuesday afternoon that she would not run for leadership in the upcoming party elections for health reasons.

Gennimata announced her retirement from the lead in a tweet in which she wrote: “The deterioration of my health, requiring hospitalization and treatment, does not allow me to run as a candidate for the KINAL party.”

Gennimata “was admitted to Evangelismos Hospital on Monday evening with symptoms of intestinal obstruction *. Surveys showed that this condition was caused by a relapse of the underlying disease, “- it says in the statement.

The 56-year-old politician and former minister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. In 2018, there was a relapse of the disease. V interview in 2020, a mother of three said she learned to live with cancer and never let fear overwhelm her daily life. Regardless of political beliefs, the Greeks flooded Gennimat’s social media accounts with wishes for a “speedy recovery.”

Fofi Gennimat’s withdrawal has already influenced the race for the leadership of KINAL and may also affect the country’s political path. Before this statement, elections for the party’s leadership were to take place on December 5. One of the remaining three candidates, Nikos Androulakis, announced shortly after Gennimata’s announcement that he had withdrawn his candidacy. The other two candidates are former PASOK employee, MP Haris Kastanidis and former Health Minister Andreas Loverdos.

Some Greeks are already predicting that Loverdos will win leadership elections and be more than willing to cooperate in a future government alliance with the conservative New Democracy, which he has long sympathized with.

According to public opinion polls, KINAL / PASOK is gaining an average of 5-5.5%.

* intestinal obstruction is the absence of normal contractions of the intestinal muscles, an obstruction or difficulty in the movement of food masses along the intestinal tube. This occurs as a result of the closure of its lumen.
