Lefteris Arapakis, founder of the Greek school of professional fishermen and activist of the movement for a clean sea and healthy fish stocks, has been awarded the honorary title of Ambassador of the Mediterranean Coast for 2021-2022 by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The title, awarded in the context of UNEP’s Mediterranean Action Plan, is “a recognition of the team’s work and shows us that we are on the right track doing what brings results,” says Arapakis, founder of the startup Enaleia, which trains and encourages the local fishing community to collect plastic in the sea.
“This is the recognition of all professional fishermen and all our partners in the fight against plastic pollution of the sea,” adds a fifth generation fisherman from Piraeus, who UNEP also named Young Earth Champion in Europe in 2020 at the age of 26.
