The Crisis Management Council in Latvia decided to declare an emergency for 3 months – due to the difficult situation due to the coronavirus and a large number of unvaccinated people.
The country’s government explains that the main goal is “to increase vaccination coverage by introducing significantly stricter restrictions on the unvaccinated” to stop the spread of covid, says Krisjanis Karins, the country’s prime minister:
“We have been fighting COVID-19 in the country for a year and a half, but the fight will not end until vaccination coverage in risk groups reaches 90%, and in society as a whole does not exceed 75%. It is still a long way to go.”
The Latvian Prime Minister notes that the situation is difficult. The number of patients with COVID-19 is growing rapidly in hospitals, and this limits the ability of medical institutions to provide the full range of services. It is also planned to strengthen control over the observance of security measures, the introduction of restrictions, says the head of government:
“Only people with COVID certificates will be able to go to stores. Exceptions will be made by outlets with essential goods ”.
Most businesses and organizations will move to remote work. In schools, wearing masks will become compulsory for everyone, electives will be limited. For indoor events, there are restrictions on the number of people present, an increase in the distance between people and mandatory masks.
Krisjanis Karins announced the introduction of mandatory vaccination for employees of state enterprises and the expansion of similar requirements for private organizations, RIA Novosti reports. The Latvian government will approve this decision on Friday 8 October. Currently, only 50% of the population in the country is vaccinated.
