Eerie images, as if scenes from a fantasy horror movie, were observed by the locals once again after 2018, when it happened for the first time. The natural phenomenon – the coasts of the sea drawn into a thinly woven web – aroused the interest of the media from all over the world.
The reason is in the “web” that covers many places of the Αιτωλικό. As agrinionews.gr explains, this is a seasonal phenomenon that mainly occurs at this time of the year, that is, in late summer and early autumn, and the reason for all this “horror” is the spiders of the genus Tetragnatha.
Specialists from the Department of Natural Resources (Φορέας Διαχείρισης Λιμνοθάλασσας Μεσολογγίου-Ακαρνικών) explained that “due to the growth of the population of mosquitoes, the natural response was the growth of populations of spiders, which have woven the surface of the net near the flight. Small coastal trees and shrubs have become a kind of “canvas”.
It is expected that with a drop in air temperature and a reduction in the reproduction of mosquitoes, spiders will gradually “curtail their active activity”, and the cobweb will be washed away after the first heavy rains.
