Residents of Heraklion prefecture, sadly calculating the damage and “bleeding wounds” caused by the elements, are in shock after tremors of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale that shook Crete on the morning of September 27.
Fellow villagers are in mourning, mourning the tragic death of 62-year-old Yakovos. The builder was at the Profitis Ilias church in Arkalohori during the earthquake, busy with its restoration. At the time of seismic activity, he was crushed by the falling dome of the church.
At this time, his 30-year-old son was with him, who helped with his work. The guy suddenly saw his father disappear under the rubble. Rushing to his aid, he himself suffered.
The Mayor of Viannos, Minas Stavrakakis, spoke about his friend who died under the rubble: “Unfortunately, my dear friend and classmate died tragically this morning in the Profitis Ilias church. During the earthquake, he was working with his son in a church when the dome collapsed on him, causing him to tragically die. As far as I know, his son was trapped along with another person who was later able to call EKAB and they were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. His son is still in shock, because his father died right before his eyes. Yakovos was the father of two children and recently became a grandfather. “
