Coronavirus at the Washington Zoo

Tigers and lions at the Washington Zoo test positive for Covid-19. In animals, lethargy and coughing.

Sick pets are treated with antibiotics to prevent pneumonia, anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-nausea drugs, AFP reports.

Zoo officials confirmed yesterday that three tigers and six lions tested positive for the coronavirus. The animals were prescribed a course of treatment in accordance with the symptoms. The zoo’s message says:

“Last weekend, security guards noticed that six African lions, a Sumatran tiger and two Siberian tigers became lethargic, lost their appetite, coughed and sneezed.”

Wild animals were infected with Covid-19, which was confirmed by preliminary tests. The authorities have specified that tests confirming the diagnosis will be ready in the coming days. Experts say that given the distance between wild animals and visitors, the latter are not at risk of infection.

Many zoos in the United States, including Washington, have announced a vaccination campaign for all species at risk of Covid-19 in these areas. In addition to felines, other animals have also become infected with the virus in the country, for example, at the Atlanta Zoo in Georgia, gorillas tested positive for covid last week. Local media reported that other incidents were recorded during the year, including 8 lions in the zoo in India.

According to ΑΠΕ ΜΠΕ, in the coming months, the animals of the zoo of the capital of the United States will be vaccinated with a drug developed by Zoetis.

This January, the gorillas from the San Diego Zoo got sick with coronavirus… This was the first known case of a primate infection in the world. The inhabitants of the safari park could have been infected from the attendant – the SARS-CoV-2 virus detected in him was asymptomatic. After two out of eight gorillas living together began to cough, droppings were taken from the animals, and the coronavirus test was positive.

When studying SARS-CoV-2, scientists are trying to determine the possibility of transmission of the virus by representatives of different species. For example, there is a hypothesis that he passed to man from a bat. In some countries, cases of infection of domestic dogs and cats from the owner have been confirmed. It is also known about the disease of lions and tigers in zoos.
