SKAI cameras have entered the “holy of holies” – the department where the decisive battle for the lives of patients with coronavirus is taking place. They captured shocking images from the COVID unit at Laiko Hospital.
In the intensive care unit, oxygen support is helping patients with severe coronavirus fight and beat it. Infectious Disease Professor Nikos Sipsas says:
“The worst thing that can happen to a person is to die of suffocation, this is the most painful death, the most painful condition when a person cannot breathe.”
He calls the patient’s condition “a tough battle” and notes with bitterness that the chances of survival in this unit are below 50%. The professor notes that some of the moments were unbearable for doctors:
“In the 2nd and 3rd waves, we were exhausted, but we made it through.”
The SKAI camera was able to look only where the doctors allowed. The shots of the difficult atmosphere in the wards of dying patients are shocking, but the 50% rate still gives many of them hope to survive. The personal data of the patients were protected.
