Giannis Adetokounbo’s mother and brother, Veronica and Alex, were granted honorary Greek citizenship by a decision signed on September 6 by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
Veronica and Alex were sworn in during a ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday. There was also “Greek-freek” himself – Yiannis Adetokounbo.
“We always felt like Greeks, but now we have an official seal and we are happy,” Yiannis said after the ceremony.
Citizenship of Veronica and Alex is honorable, since formally they do not have the right to do so according to the current Greek law, although Veronica has been living in Greece since 1991, and Alexandros was born in this country in 2001.

Alexandros “Alex” Emeka Adetokunbo – the younger brother of basketball players Yannis, Thanassis and Kostas – was born in Greece in 2001 and spent the first 12 years of his life here before the family moved to the United States.
Veronica and her husband Charles Adetokunbo (Αντετοκούνμπο) migrated from Nigeria to Greece in 1991.
Giannis and Thanassis Adetokounbo received Greek citizenship in 2013, their brother Kostas in 2016.
In his tweet, the Prime Minister welcomed the honorary citizenship of Veronica and Alex, saying, among other things, that
the Adetokunbo family represents a Greece that fights, overcomes difficulties and keeps the family alive. “
