Off the coast of the Greek island of Folegandros, a coast guard operation to rescue migrants has begun.
Coast Guard vessels rushed to the scene, according to protothema.gr. A sailboat with about 50 immigrants was located south of Folegandros, in the bay of Agali. The boats attempted to approach the migrant vessel, however, as it was very close to land, the stone ridge and the shallows prevented the rescue operation.
The mayor of Folegandros, Euphalia Papadopoulou, in a conversation with protothema.gr, spoke about the ongoing operation, stressing that the migrants are on the sailing ship and have not disembarked from it. People are in a deplorable state.
Currently, no additional information has been received about the incident.
