Under unclear circumstances, the cargo ship SEA BIRD crashed into the rocky islet of Karavia in the Myrtoan Sea (Μυρτώο Πέλαγος). During the rescue operation, a crew of 16 people was rescued.
A dry cargo ship flying the flag of the Togolese Republic transported wheat. Onboard there were 16 crew members, all Syrian citizens. The incident took place early this morning. Under unclear circumstances, the cargo ship collided with the rocky island of Karavia in the Myrtos Sea and began to sink.
According to the Athens News Agency, during a major rescue operation involving the ships of the Greek Navy and watercraft, all 16 crew members were rescued. According to the Minister of Shipping Yiannis Plakiotakis, the Greek ships remain in place to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
There is no data yet on the state of the ship that crashed. The weather in the area is good.
