Biden finds where to house Afghan refugees

After discussing the situation with Afghan refugees in a 25-minute telephone conversation, US President Joe Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez agreed on a possible location for the Afghans – at two military bases in southern Spain.

They agreed that the bases at Moron de la Frontera near Seville and Roth near Cadiz would be used to house Afghan citizens working for the US government. At least until the time when they will not be provided with places to live in other countries. The Spanish government said in a statement today:

“Pedro Sanchez and Joe Biden have agreed to use the Moron and Rota bases to house Afghans working with the United States while awaiting relocation.”

The head of the Spanish government said on Twitter:

“I just had a constructive conversation with President Joe Biden, during which we discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, in particular the situation in Afghanistan and the cooperation between our governments in the evacuation of citizens from this country.”

On Saturday evening, a plane carrying 110 Afghan refugees with their families touched down in Spain. The refugees arrived at a reception center located at a military base near Madrid. Among them, 36 people worked for the United States in Afghanistan. The base is used to house Afghan refugees who worked in European institutions and their families. Then they will be resettled to other EU countries.

A huge number of local residents recruited Americans – over 300,000. It is clear that only a few “lucky ones” will be able to leave Afghanistan. However, yesterday the State Department announced that Mexico, Albania, Chile and Uganda expressed a desire to accommodate Afghan refugees.
