The third powerful earthquake in the last 24 hours in Haiti: 304 dead, 1,800 injured

Two earthquakes, 1 minute apart and measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, rocked western Haiti yesterday. The magnitude of today’s third is estimated at 5.9 points. Many dead and wounded.

The tremors were felt by residents all over the country, as well as the Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, Cuba, Small Outer Islands (USA).

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 8 km from Petit Trou de Nippes, 119 km west of Port-au-Prince. The source depth was 10 km. A tsunami threat was announced yesterday, but the warning was later withdrawn.

The death toll has risen to 304 as of this morning, with another 1,800 injured, according to Director of Civil Protection Jerry Chandler.
