The heat is in no hurry to leave Greece, and against its background hail, heavy rains and gusty winds fell on the country.
Weather troubles mainly hit northern Greece, starting at noon on Wednesday and peaking in the evening. A torrential rain fell on Thessaloniki, forcing the residents taken by surprise to seek shelter.
Halkidiki experienced storms with strong winds, multiple lightning and rain, especially in the municipality of Sithonia. Fires broke out in some places, presumably due to lightning, APE-MPE reports. However, all of them, by the joint efforts of firefighters and rain, were extinguished.
In the prefecture of Halkidiki, according to the fire service, 75 firefighters are working in 35 special vehicles. The fires were observed in a forested area in the second section of Chalkidiki, in the municipality of Sithonia. One fire in Neos Marmaras, in the vineyards of Porto Carras, the second in the Parthenon. Fires have also been reported in areas of the Kassandra municipality in Halkidiki, Afito and Fourka.
A long-awaited drop in temperature is expected today after a sweltering 40-degree heat wave. Some parts of Greece will experience thunderstorms.
