Greek Olympians will share their prize money with fire victims

The Greek athletes from the Olympic team intend to transfer part of the prize money to the victims of the fires.

Silver medalists of the Tokyo Olympics, the men’s water polo team, intend to donate half of the prize money to the fire victims. The team’s decision was announced yesterday by its captain Yannis Funtulis. His statement was posted on the website of the Greek National Olympic Committee:

“Given the difficult times our country is going through, we consider it our duty to help by donating half of the amount to the victims of the fires.”

The Greek water polo team was just a little short of the gold medal – in the final they lost to the Serbs with a score of 10:13. Vangelis Marinakis, the owner of the Olympiacos football club, plans to pay the monetary reward to the Greek Olympians.

Earlier, Giorgos Petreas, Olympiacos volleyball player, announced his decision to help the victims of the fires.

The international sportsman offered to use his home in the capital for 2 weeks to a homeless family, posting an ad on his Instagram:

I donate my home in Athens to a fire-affected family from 12 August to 26 August. Anyone interested, write me a personal message. Only serious suggestions, given the seriousness of the situation. Thanks.
