2,500-year-old olive tree burned down in fires in Evia

On the burning island of Evia for a week now, a unique olive tree has burned down, giving its fruits and coolness in the shade of its branchy branches for more than two and a half millennia.

The 2,500-year-old olive tree was destroyed by fire yesterday as a result of ongoing forest fires. It grew in the olive grove of Rovia and was a symbol of the landscape. Until its death, the tree remained fruitful.

A photo of the tree that died in the fire was posted on Twitter by Apostolis Panayiotou, and many Greeks left their comments, mourning the consequences of the anomalous fires. After all, the destruction of a unique ancient tree is only one of the many losses suffered by the inhabitants of the island of Evia.

Yannis Konzias, Mayor of Istiaia-Eydipsos, says with pain:

Our villages are crumbling one after another. One municipality after another is completely destroyed. What was saved was saved by volunteers and residents of this land. They were the last ones who saved something from their homes, something that we can hold on to in order to stay and live on this earth.
