Unfortunately, something that everyone feared and tried to avoid happened. Late Friday evening, under the onslaught of the wind, a front of fire crossed the Athens-Lamia National Road at the level of Malakas.
The authorities demand the evacuation of Markopoulos Oropu, Buffy, Mavrosuvala, Milesi and Levidi, and Malakas has already been evacuated.
Police with fire extinguishers, firefighters and volunteers fought with all their might to prevent the passage of fire on the opposite side of the Athens-Lamia national road, but unfortunately without success.

The resurgence of the Varibobi fire on Friday evening led to a widening of the fire front, aided by strong winds towards the pine forest in Malakasy.
After burning hundreds of acres of forest in 2 hours, it reached the National Road shortly before 10:00 pm, in particular at the level of the famous concert hall. The fire has crossed the tarssa and no one can predict where it will stop.
Indicative are the words of the mayor of Oropos, who emphasized that “if the fire passes the Athens-Lamia highway, then in a few hours it will reach Oropos and stop only by the sea.”
For the same reason, the pre-trial detention center in Amygdaleza was recently evacuated as a precautionary measure. The police, in cooperation with the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, took the migrants by bus for safety reasons, the foreigners detained in the center to other structures of Attica.
Fight for Agios Stefanos and Afidnes
The second front, which has become very large, is the one that has been raging since last night in the area of Agios Stefanos. The flame is in the middle of the settlements of Pefkofito and Pontia, where the fire burned many houses and reached the outskirts of Stamata, and on the other side the perimeter of Lake Marathon burns out and the fire front is heading towards Kaletsi. At the same time, new points of ignition are observed in Kapandriti and Polydendri.

One more front of fire was deployed in full force, in the Afidnes area, which reached the settlement of Ippokratio Politias.
Fourth front – threatened by Agio Petrupoli
However, the greatest fears among the leadership of the fire service are caused by the fourth front of fire. This is the last fire that broke out in the afternoon at the Ano Liosia cemetery. The fire, which broke out among shrubs and dried grass, has now spread to the forested area at the top of Mount Poikilu (Ποικίλου) and threatens to descend into the densely populated area of Agio Petrupoli.
It is worth noting that, as in other similar cases, there was no reason for this fire, which automatically leads to the thought of arson.
