The fire department said that arson was recorded on Friday evening in Pedion tou Areos city park, but the fire was quickly extinguished. The woman who tried to set fire to the park was detained.
The arsonist managed to set fire to several trees, but firefighters and guards promptly came to the rescue and put out the fire.
Whether she was a city madman or a member of an organized group of arsonists, the police still have to find out.
It is alarming that the woman was clearly preparing for arson. Several lighters, a gas cylinder, a plastic bottle of gasoline or cheap oil were found with her.
Park Pedion tou Areos
Field of Mars, or Pedion tou Areos, is a park in the center of Athens and the city district formed around it. Named for the ancient Roman district and park in Paris. The park covers an area of 27.7 hectares, located about 1 km from Omonias Square.
