The Athens National Observatory’s weather service has released a pilot estimate of how the disastrous fire in Attica will develop, with a map showing the spread of the fire.
As announced by the METEO Operations Unit of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA), in collaboration with bushfire researcher Dr. J. Akli Benali of the University of Lisbon and Fabio Silva of the Portuguese Civil Protection Force are presenting a pilot estimate of the expected spread of a bushfire that is currently affecting a large part of northern Attica. “The assessment is the result of an assessment of available satellite observations and operational weather forecast data from EAA – meteo.gr and refers to the time period from 17:00 on 06/08/2021 to 06:00 on 07/07/2021.
At the same time, as the statement says, “Aware of the challenges posed by the new reality of forest fires today, EAA – meteo.gr offers significant scientific collaboration between European countries, striving for more integrated management and treatment of the fires of the present and future. In this context, this implies the beginning of this initially informal cooperation, the product of which is the above map. “
