43-year-old detained on suspicion of arson in Kryoneri

On Saturday morning, a 43-year-old Greek who was arrested on Friday in the Kryoneri area on suspicion of arson will be brought to the prosecutor’s office.

A criminal case has been opened against the man, in which he is accused of setting fire to a forest, possession of drugs and violating the law on torches and sparklers.

As it became known, the 43-year-old man was found this morning by volunteers near Mandri Kryoneri, driving along a country road on a motorcycle with no license plates.

The volunteers considered him suspicious, because during his stay at the site about 50 meters from the stopping place, a fire suddenly broke out, which was not justified by any other reasons other than arson.

The volunteers pointed out the suspicious motorcyclist to the OPKE police, who arrested the 43-year-old and took him to the police.

The detainee claimed to have arrived at the scene to help put out the fire.

However, during a search in his house, matches, lighters, firecrackers, a mosquito coil and nut shells were found and seized, which, according to the police, could be used as lighters without leaving marks.

Small quantities of raw cannabis were also found and seized.

A police investigation by the State Security Service showed that the 43-year-old man may have been involved in two more fires in the Kryoneri area. The first one about half an hour after midnight on 4-8-20121 at the Kryoneri cemetery and one today at 00.15 in the Mandri area.

It is difficult to say how real these accusations are. There is a very high probability that the cannabis lover will be made the scapegoat, and the accusations are knocked out of him in the classic way – beating.
