Ancient Olympia on fire: dozens of houses burned down – battle for archaeological sites

The Mayor of Ancient Olympia, Georgios Georgiopoulos, told ERT that the fire is going the same way as in 2007, and stressed that dozens of houses have already burned down. Among other things, from 10 to 12 houses burned down in the Platanos area and four more in Kastania. Information about the village of Pelopio is drowning. “The threat to homes is still relevant. The fire is located one and a half kilometers from the archaeological site. Thanks to the dense vegetation, the fire can overcome this distance in a matter of minutes,” the mayor said, adding that he is in contact with the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.
