Stefonos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari failed to reach the semifinals of the tennis tournament of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
They lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-10 to two experienced tennis players in doubles, Australians Pierce-Barty, and were eliminated from the continuation of the tournament.
In the first set, John Pierce and Ashley Barty confirmed their predictions, they wanted to become the favorites for today’s match, but the Greek tennis players also showed that they are not accidentally among the best in the world. Although they don’t have much experience in doubles, they kept the Australians out thanks to their very good 4-4 serve. But then Pierce-Barty broke Tsitsipas’s serve and took the set.
In the second set, the Greek team found a way to control the opponent’s play. He won the first two games, the Australians lost, but our champions again increased the difference to 3: 1. Our tennis players kept the difference between the two games until the end of the set and when the score was 6: 4 they drew 1: 1.
In the third set, Pierce took advantage of his serve to equalize, Tsitsipas responded, and then Sakkari made the score 2: 1. Pierce, with a decade of doubles experience, put Australia ahead 3-2. Some mistakes of the Greek duo combined with the experience of the Australians, and the score was 9-4. The Greeks cut the tally to 6-9, but the Pierce-Barty experience left no room for hope, the Australians won 10-6.
