COVID-19 in children: risks of severe consequences

Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, talks about the risks of severe consequences for children. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The infectious disease specialist states that about one in three children who have recovered from the disease is faced with postcoid complications. The risk is increased for overweight children. Gorelov lists:

“The heart, kidneys, endocrine glands, brain, gastrointestinal tract are affected.”

The specialist reports that the age group 14-17 years old is most susceptible to coronavirus infection, which is characterized by increased activity and mobility. The incidence among young children is significantly lower, as the summer holidays are long and they are fragmented.

Anna Kuznetsova, Commissioner for the Rights of the Child under the President of Russia, said that today there is no vaccine for adolescents and children in the country. However, she believes that it is premature to discuss their vaccination, before receiving full-fledged clinical studies. When permission to use the drug for children and adolescents appears, vaccinations will be given only with the consent of the parents of minors, she said. MOSCOW 24.
