Thrombosis risk in coronavirus

Andrey Pozdnyakov, chief physician of Invitro-Siberia, told RIA Novosti who is at risk of thrombosis in COVID-19.

Those who oppose vaccination scare opponents with thrombosis after vaccination. However, with coronavirus disease, the risk of blood clots for some patients is much higher and more fatal. Thrombosis is a fairly common complication of COVID-19, which carries additional risks to the lives of patients. Many people are genetically predisposed to it, says the head physician of the clinical diagnostic laboratory “Invitro-Siberia”:

“First of all, these are people with a genetic predisposition. It is worth noting that this is quite common in the population, so there are a lot of people who need to closely monitor the state of blood vessels.”

The infectious disease specialist explained that one of the cells that create favorable conditions for the life and reproduction of the SARS-COV-2 virus is the endothelium, which lines the surface of blood vessels from the inside. When its cells are damaged by a virus, the elasticity of the inner lining of the vessels is lost, which complicates the blood flow:

“Since the endothelium recovers rather slowly, thrombosis may occur if the inner lining of blood vessels is damaged by the SARS-COV-2 virus. In this case, a person may not even suspect that he is developing a blood clot.”

It is interesting that for many years a person may not even suspect that he has a genetic predisposition to thrombosis, it does not manifest itself in everyday life, and the closest relatives of such a disease may not have such a disease. Pozdnyakov says:

“Unfortunately, in genetically susceptible people, the first detection is often fatal – it could be a stroke, heart attack or thrombosis of any other vein.”

The doctor draws the attention of journalists RIA Newsthat women taking oral contraceptives are more likely to develop blood clots. Some other factors also affect – chronic heart disease, overweight associated with endocrine problems:

“That is why COVID-19 is extremely unpleasant for people with cardiovascular and endocrine pathology, their blood clotting changes dramatically and they die most often from thrombotic complications.”

When asked about the possibility of increasing the risk of thrombosis after vaccination, the infectious disease specialist replied: “With regard to vaccination against COVID-19, the Sputnik V has no risk of thrombosis in official sources.”
