According to data released yesterday by the National Public Health Organization, zero percent of positive cases of coronavirus were recorded on the Dodecanese island of Karpathos, which is in a “prime position” amid the new outbreak of the pandemic.
These data refer to the period from 12 to 18 July 2021, however, even if cases are confirmed on the island, they are immediately quarantined to avoid spreading to the community, as the Mayor of Karpathos, Yiannis Nisirios, noted in iefimerida.gr.
Karpathos practically “outlived” the coronavirus in July. EODY data from July 1 is indicative, which is gradually transforming Karpathos into a covid-free model. According to experts, from the first to the 21st, only four cases of coronavirus were detected on the island. One recorded on 7 July, one on 11/07, and two others on 21 July.
“We continue strict control at the port and at the airport. Therefore, we keep the indicator practically at zero level.
Citizens arriving on the island with covid are immediately quarantined. At the moment, vaccination coverage in Kalymnos reaches 75-80%, and we continue to move forward. We have now begun vaccinating adolescents aged 15-17, ”says Mr Nisirios in an interview with iefimerida.gr. “Today we are more strictly adhering to these measures so that it does not happen like in Crete,” he added.
An upbeat tourism message from Karpathos
According to the mayor of the island, good epidemiological data have a positive effect on tourism as more and more foreigners and Greeks choose to visit Karpathos. It is reported to have a capacity of about 19,000 beds.
“We have a lot of visitors now. The Greeks prefer to visit Karpathos this summer, choosing it as a family holiday destination.
At the same time, we have a lot of Americans, almost all tourist properties are booked. We are doing great with tourism! We can already say that we are 60% in a better position than last year. It is characteristic that on Wednesday (21/7) about 500 people arrived to us on the Blue Star ship, ”said the mayor of the island.
