AP: “Almost all deaths from COVID in the US are now unvaccinated”

Nearly all deaths from COVID-19 in the United States now occur in people who have not been vaccinated, a stunning demonstration of how effective vaccines are. And the evidence that the number of deaths per day, now less than 300, could be virtually zero if everyone were vaccinated, says publications Associated Press editions.

The rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases, as well as the spread of the Delta mutation, are worrying experts, who are sounding the alarm and calling for additional vaccinations.

AP analyzed data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC itself did not estimate what percentage of hospitalizations and deaths occur in fully vaccinated people, citing data limitations. Among them: only about 45 states report breakthrough infections, and some are more aggressive than others. Thus, the data is likely to underestimate the number of such cases, the CDC said.

However, the overall trend that emerges from the data echoes what many health authorities across the country are seeing and what leading experts say.

Earlier this month, Andy Slavitt, a former Biden administration’s COVID-19 adviser, suggested that 98% to 99% of Americans dying from the coronavirus are not vaccinated.

And CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walenski said on Tuesday that the vaccine is so effective that “almost every death, especially among adults, due to COVID-19 is now completely preventable.” She called such deaths “especially tragic.” US deaths have plummeted from a peak of over 3,400 on average in mid-January, one month before vaccinations.

According to the CDC, about 63% of all eligible Americans, age 12 and older, have received at least one dose, and 53% are fully vaccinated. While vaccine remains in short supply in much of the world, supply in the US is so great and demand has fallen so dramatically that vaccines remain unused.

Ross Bagnes, a 68-year-old small business owner in Cheyenne, Wyoming, was eligible for the vaccine in early February but did not receive it. He died on June 4, infected and unvaccinated, after spending more than three weeks in the hospital, his lungs filled with fluid. He could not swallow due to a stroke. “He never went outside, so he didn’t think he would catch it,” said his grieving sister Karen McKnight. She wondered, “Why take the risk when you can get the vaccine?”

Experts predict that preventable deaths will continue, with outbreaks in unvaccinated regions of the country in the fall and winter. Ali Mokdad, a professor of health performance science at the University of Washington in Seattle, said the simulations suggest there will be 1,000 deaths a day again next year.

Arkansas, with one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, where only about 33% of the population is fully protected, is on the rise in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. “It’s sad to see someone go to the hospital or die when it can be prevented,” Governor Asa Hutchinson tweeted, urging people to get vaccinated.

In Seattle’s King County, the public health department has found only three deaths in the past 60 days in people who were fully vaccinated. The rest, approximately 95% of the 62 deaths, were not vaccinated or received only one vaccine.

“It’s all someone’s parents, grandparents, siblings, friends,” said Dr. Marc Del Beccaro, who is helping lead the King County vaccination program. “There are still many deaths and they can be prevented.”

In the St. Louis area, more than 90% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 have not been vaccinated, said Dr. Alex Garza, a hospital administrator who leads the outbreak control task force. “Most of them regret not getting the vaccine,” Garza said. “This is a fairly common refrain we hear from COVID patients.”

Stories of the death of unvaccinated people may convince some people to get vaccinated, but young people – a group unlikely to get vaccinated – may be more motivated by a desire to protect their loved ones, said David Michaels, an epidemiologist at the University School of Public Health in the capital. “Others need paid leave to get vaccinated and to deal with any side effects,” Michaels said.

This month, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration began requiring health care employers, including hospitals and nursing homes, to provide such free time. But Michaels, who headed OSHA under President Barack Obama, said the agency should have gone further and applied the rule to meat and poultry businesses, other food processing businesses, and other places where workers are at risk.

Bagn, who lived alone, ran a business helping people register their companies in Wyoming for tax breaks. He was winding up the business to retire, but when he fell ill in April, he wrote to his sister about the illness that made him dizzy. “Whatever it is. This mistake seriously crippled me, ”he wrote.

When his health deteriorated, a neighbor finally convinced him to go to the hospital.
