A 19-year-old girl was detained and traded by a police officer

A police officer was arrested for human trafficking and the detention of a 19-year-old girl. The case was revealed when the girl managed to escape from home and seek help from a cafe nearby, in the suburb of Ilioupoli in eastern Athens.

The girl ran away from home after being sexually abused by her father for several years. The 39-year-old policeman acted as her “savior” and “protector”, but at the same time turned her into a sex slave. The girl’s father was also arrested for sexual abuse of her between the ages of 11 and 17.

The girl was injured and frightened, and the cafe staff informed the police, as well as an organization that provides assistance to victims of violence. She also asked for a lawyer to defend her.

The girl told the police that the officer held her captive at home, mocked her and even threatened her with a pistol. He forced her to take drugs, and also traded her for money as a sex slave.

The 39-year-old policeman was already under scrutiny by the Internal Investigation Department, and since June he has been removed from office for other crimes and will be fired.

According to a police press release, the officer on leave following his dismissal was arrested for bodily harm, human trafficking, threats, violation of gun laws and domestic violence. The girl’s father was also reportedly arrested for rape and violation of gun laws.

The victim was held for several hours at headquarters for long-term testimony, and then taken to a state hospital for examination. Ironically, the victim did not have access to a lawyer for about 12 hours, a fact that sparked a scandal on social media when dozens of people said the police were treating the victim like a criminal.

Late Saturday, media reported that the girl’s parents were also summoned to the police headquarters.

Social pressure on the police and the Minister for the Protection of Citizens continued on Sunday, when dozens of Greek Internet users condemned the police because they did not take the victim straight to the hospital, but continued to hold the girl for 12 hours without access to a lawyer. They demand full investigation and transparency of the case, assuming that the officer was a member of a gang of traffickers in persons and pornography.

The officer and father were taken to the prosecutor on Sunday morning.
