The number of people infected in Greece rose to 2107 in 24 hours; 10 deaths;

On Thursday, health authorities announced that the number of infections in Greece continued to rise, reaching 2,107 in the past 24 hours. Another 10 Covid patients have died, and the number of intubated Covid patients in hospital intensive care units has dropped to 153.

Information from the briefing

At a briefing on Thursday, health experts said the average age of those infected had dropped to 23, “giving a decline of nearly ten years in a week.”

Most of the newly infected are in the 15-24 age group, while there has been a slight increase in the 35-55 age group. And in the age group over 65 years old, no change.

The rolling average of infections reached 1,081 out of 442 in the previous week. Health experts attributed the rise in infections to the weakening of protective measures and the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19, as well as nightlife. The positivity rate (R) increased to 2.46%. In areas with an increased epidemiological burden, this figure is much higher. According to Professor Vana Papaevangelou, there are 9,000 active cases in Greece today, adding that in Attica, the number of active cases exceeds 4,000, and the average age of those infected is 24 years. She stressed that Attica, the northern Aegean islands and Crete are at the center of the pandemic.

Admission to the hospital is 48 people per day. Every third patient is between 25 and 55 years old, and every tenth is under 24 years old.

Papaevangelu added that there does not appear to be any pressure on the public health system, mainly because vaccinations have created a significant protective shield.

To and from the islands with Rapid Tests

Despite relevant leaks to the press earlier today, the authorities did not announce any new measures, such as “mandatory rapid tests” for those returning from the islands. How could they have implemented such a measure, if many, if not most of the Greek islands do not have the infrastructure for such checks, and the government did nothing in this direction before the summer holidays of Greeks and tourists.
