Wastewater contamination of the water supply

Three people are accused of dumping sewage liquid waste into the water pipe of Aliakmonas.

An environmental law case was brought against three people: a 50-year-old representative of a biogas company, a 45-year-old man in charge of the company’s operations and maintenance, and a 36-year-old mobile tank driver (οδηγού Ι.Χ.Φ . βυτιοφόρου).

Investigation of the incident was started in connection with the receipt of a corresponding complaint. According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, based on studies of the quality of water flowing from the Aliakmonas River to the wastewater treatment plant in Thessaloniki ΕΥΑΘ, it was found that on 30 July 2019, a 36-year-old tanker driver dumped the contents of a tanker into an irrigation canal instead of to “fertilize” the farmland as intended.

As a result, the liquid wastewater got into the water supply system (from Aliakmonas to the wastewater treatment plant), from where it went to Thessaloniki. This fact could endanger the health of people and the water supply in general, according to the police statement.
