The Greek parliament has discussed a bill on changes in labor legislation. 158 deputies voted “for”, i.e. overwhelming majority. At the same time, the opposition called for a boycott of the labor law, saying that it was a “nightmare”.
Several provisions, mainly those concerning the incorporation of directives and conventions of the International Labor Office, have received the approval of the opposition, with the exception of the KKE (KKE), which voted against the principle, articles and the bill as a whole.
Bill was adopted in principle under 129 articles and by a majority of votes in general.
In particular, he initially received 158 votes in favor against 142 votes against the opposition.
After three days of debate that sparked tensions and divisions, opposition parties initially voted against the bill.
However, with the exception of the KKE, the opposition ended up supporting some specific provisions regarding two international conventions and the Community directive on violence at work and sexual harassment, as well as articles defining parental leave.

SYRIZA voted on a total of 56 articles of the bill, namely: 1, 2, 5-8, 13, 15-21, 24-30, 32-36, 38-44, 46-54, 60., 64, 68, 71-74, 76, 77, 79, 81, 126-128. The Κ.ΙΝΑΛ party voted for articles: 1-8, 11-23, 30, 33-54, 56, 60-62, 64, 67, 68, 70-81, 83, 87, 127-129. MERA25 voted for articles: 1, 2, 4, 13, 27 and 126. Ελληνική Λύση (Hellenic Solution) voted for articles: 6, 7, 9, 10, 27, 28, 30, 34, 35, 37, 38, 40 -47, 71 and 76.
“The labor protection law is now a big step forward. This brings Greece closer to developed European countries as we adhere to European labor policies. This is a law that gives strength to the employee, strength to the economy, ”said Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Kostis Hatzidakis immediately after the announcement of the results of the roll-call vote.
“The roll-call vote we called for led to the exposure of the opposition. SYRIZA voted in favor of half of the articles of the bill, but expressed opposition to the 8-hour workday. I repeat, they voted against the clause that protects the 8-hour working day, while at the same time voting in favor of the provisions on the trade union rights of the self-employed, regarding a flexible timetable for reconciling personal and professional activities, ”Kostis Hatzidakis said and added:“ We are waiting for an explanation of their position, such an unprecedented political hypocrisy. “
Some provisions of the Law
In particular, the amendments provide for the extension of nine weeks of maternity leave, including the introduction of a seven-day leave for assisted reproductive technologies and leave for mothers to care for a child born through surrogacy. And also the list of prohibitions on dismissal is expanding. For example, the only breadwinner in the family cannot be dismissed categorically in the first six months after the birth of a child.
In addition, the ministry proposes to introduce an electronic work card for each worker, with the help of which it will be possible to track hours worked and leave in real time. At the first stage, the digital card will be applied in banks and industry, and then it will be implemented everywhere.
