Sun, sea, entertainment and an end to free internet surfing, educational workshops and lectures on history and culture, communication, team spirit and much more will make up the daily life of children who will go to summer camp this year.
The camp owners are waiting for the latest instructions and work protocol to be “fully equipped” to receive the first groups of children. The demand for summer camps for children is very high this year.
“There are fifteen camps in northern Greece that meet the needs of schoolchildren and are located in Halkidiki, Serres, Thassos, Kavala and Kalampaka. The total number of children covered by the OAED and EFKA programs is more than one hundred thousand, half of which will be housed in camps in northern Greece, ”Andreas Michaludis, Secretary General of the Pan-Hellenic Camp Association (PELK), told Agency 104.9 FM.
“This summer is not like last year, when 5 shifts were provided for the children. The same number of children will need to be taken in 4 shifts this year. This happened due to the extension of the school year in primary schools, so the shift in July was canceled, ”added Mr. Michaludis, explaining that there are still vacancies for August.
“We are ready to welcome the children, and this year we will offer them many additional activities and entertainment,” says Yannis Iordanidis, PELK Board Member and Camp Manager in Nea Skioni (Halkidiki).
In a conversation with APE-MPE, he mentions that parents from the first day of the opening of the program rushed to apply and were included in the waiting lists, showing great interest this year.
“The need for a camp, especially this year, for children who have been locked in their homes for several months has been enormous. On our part, in order to meet the demand, we have done a great job modernizing the infrastructure. We’ve also added entertainment and, of course, increased compliance with the pandemic, ”emphasizes Mr. Jordanidis.
As the camp owners note, thanks to this experience, children receive useful lessons, emphasizing that rest in a summer camp is not only fresh air, sun, sea and food, but interaction with the environment, gaining useful skills, playing sports, etc.
