Life imprisonment for a criminal who attacked tax officers with an ax

The court unanimously found guilty a 45-year-old resident of Kozani, who attacked tax officials with an ax last July.

Florina’s court sentenced the defendant to life in prison and 26 years, of which 20 without parole. The verdict came amid disapproval from those attending the trial, including the victims of the attack.

It is noted that the court changed the charge in the case after one of the hospitalized tax officers died in the hospital, after several months of treatment. The charge was reformulated “from attempted murder” to “premeditated murder in a calm state of mind.” Thus, a 45-year-old man was found guilty of attempted serial murder, as well as the use and possession of weapons.

As previously reported by “Russian Athens”, a citizen who attacked tax officials in Kozani with an ax was arrested and taken into custody in July 2020. Two victims were admitted to the hospital in serious condition.

The 45-year-old perpetrator of the unprecedented attack, who seriously injured three officers, was sentenced to pre-trial detention with the consent of the prosecutor and investigator. The man spent about 4 hours in a courthouse in Kozani, where reinforcements of police officers arrived. According to eyewitnesses, at about 13:15 the offender, holding a bag and a plastic bag, entered the building, giving his name at the entrance control. He went through the standard temperature measurement procedure and went up to the 2nd floor. In the corridor, a man took an ax out of a bag, opened the door to the office and attacked the employees of the income department. The employee of the department was the first to be hit with an ax, screaming heart-rendingly. And only then the offender switched to three of her colleagues – two women and a man. Another employee, trying to avoid the blows, jumped out onto the stairs in panic, where she fell and injured her leg.

All the wounded were transported to a medical facility and treated at the local «αμάτσειο hospital (Kozani). It was said that out of the four wounded, the man received more blows, and, according to doctors, his condition was characterized as very serious. The man subsequently died.
