Cases of myocarditis and pericarditis detected after Pfizer-Moderna vaccination

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young men developed heart muscle inflammation after a second dose of Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna’s COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, Reuters reported.

CDCs (Κέντρα Ελέγχου και Πρόληψης Νοσημάτων των ΗΠΑ) and other health authorities began investigating rare heart disease cases after the Israeli Ministry of Health announced it.

According to Reuters, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says they are still assessing the risks but have not yet concluded that there is a causal link between vaccines and cases of myocarditis or pericarditis.

According to the CDC, some patients required treatment, but most of them were completely free of symptoms.
More than half of the cases were reported after a second dose of Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna (MRNA) vaccines in young people aged 12 to 24.

“We clearly have an imbalance,” said Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of the CDC’s Directorate of Immune Safety, noting that the vast majority of cases occur within a week of vaccination. A total of 283 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis were reported after the second dose of the vaccine in people aged 16 to 24 years.

Shimabukuro also said that the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) – another monitoring system – showed an increased incidence of inflammation occurring in vaccinated people aged 16 to 39 after the second dose compared to that seen after the first dose.

It is worth noting that approximately 130 million people in the United States received both doses of one of the mRNA vaccines.
