Peach growers in Velvento talk about catastrophic weather damage. This refers to the hail that fell in the Kozani region. Bad weather also swept through Lamia, Grevin and Livadier.
Bad weather hit several regions of Greece yesterday, bringing with it rainstorms, stormy winds and hail. Hazardous weather events are expected at noon and afternoon in some areas of the country, especially in the Peloponnese, according to the EMY Emergency Bulletin.
Peach growers in Velvento say that “the hail has caused irreparable damage to the crop.” “Yesterday’s hail may have lasted only ten minutes, but it was so strong and violent that it not only destroyed 20% of all production already affected by the March and April frosts, but also caused significant damage to the trees,” said the president of ΑΣΕΠΟΠ Velventu Nikos Kutliampas, expressing concern that “many growers may not be able to save their trees and I fear entire acres will be lost.”
During the weather disasters, the Grevin fire department received 47 requests for the installation of water pumps due to flooding. A powerful thunderstorm was observed in Lamia. In particular, there were power outages in the Amphithea area.
