Yesterday, the press service of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry reported that at the Medininkai border crossing, the Belarusian authorities detained a car with a Lithuanian diplomatic post from Vilnius.
The border guards demanded to open the diplomatic seals and open access to the inspection of the car of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission. After the diplomatic courier refused to comply with these requirements, the car was returned to Lithuanian territory.
Vilnius protested to Minsk, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry urgently summoned the Belarusian ambassador to hand over a protest note. The press service said:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its strong protest against the unprecedented detention of a car with a diplomatic post of the Republic of Lithuania on the Lithuanian-Belarusian state border.
The incident was commented by Gabrielius Landsbergis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania:
The detention of a car with a diplomatic bag at the state border is a serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Belarus has once again demonstrated that the rules of the civilized world no longer exist for this state. This is a stormy dictatorship in the center of Europe.
