Queen Sofia of Spain is in Greece today on an official visit, intending to visit the islands of Leros and Lipsi.
Accompanied by the Spanish consul in Greece, the dignitary visited the island of Leros, where she was warmly welcomed by the mayor and representatives of the municipal authorities.
The Queen of Spain was received at the island’s airport by the Metropolitan of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalea, Mr. Paisios, in the presence of the Mayor of the island, Mr. Kolias Michalis, Deputy Mayor for Finance, Mr. Kustis Dimitris, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Nektarios Billis.
Ms Sophia is expected to visit Lipsi at a later date to take a closer look at the work in progress to create a shelter for marine life in the Aegean Sea (Καταφυγίου Θαλάσσιας Ζωής ήςιγαίου).
Once completed, the shelter will reportedly function as a care center for marine mammals and turtles. Rehabilitation of dolphins released from captivity will also be carried out here. The research center, among other things, will study issues of marine ecology.
