ΜΙΤ kidnapped and arrested Gülen’s nephew

Turkish special services kidnapped and took to Turkey the nephew of cleric Fethullah Gulen, the main enemy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who accuses him of planning a military coup in 2016.

Selahattin Gülen was taken to Turkey by agents of the National Intelligence Service (MIT) after being arrested in an unnamed country, according to the state news agency Anadolu.

Anadou, who posted a photo of the suspect handcuffed between two Turkish flags, did not say whether the operation was coordinated with the country in which it was carried out.

Selahattin Gülen is accused of belonging to the “terrorist organization FETO,” as Ankara describes Gülen’s movement. The latter, who lives in the United States, claims to be the head of a peaceful NGO network and denies involvement in the July 2016 coup attempt against Erdogan. But the Turkish president, once a Gülen ally who he relied heavily on, now describes him as the leader of a “terrorist” organization that sought to infiltrate the government and topple it.

After the failed coup, Turkey “repatriated” dozens of people accused of belonging to the Fethullah Gulen movement, mainly from the Balkans and Africa. In 2018, the kidnapping in Kosovo by ΜΙΤ of six Turkish citizens accused of having ties to Gulen caused a political crisis in the country and led to the resignation of the Minister of the Interior and the head of the intelligence service.

The persecution of opponents continues in Turkey itself. There, and five years after the attempted coup, the persecution of alleged supporters of Gulen continues. Since 2016, tens of thousands of people have been arrested, at least 140,000 have been fired or sent to jail.
