Issuance of a driver’s license and their renewal electronically

The new provision of the law on the issuance of driver’s licenses and their renewal put an end to a series of bureaucratic procedures.

Now all citizens will be able to obtain an electronic driver’s license or renew it in all thirteen regions through the website gov.gr. The jointly responsible ministries of digital government, infrastructure and transport have expanded the scope of e-services to the other eight regions of the country.

According to Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Yannis Kefalogiannis, citizens of the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Western Greece, Western Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, the Ionian Islands, the South Aegean Sea and the South Aegean Sea will be able to replace the driver’s license, as well as issue a copy (in damage, loss or theft) using a simple procedure.

Thanks to digitization, 59 transport departments with 84 driver’s license offices and 411 service operators are relieved of the administrative burden, saving valuable resources and time.

To date, 7071 applications have been filed, of which 3408 are related to the replacement of driver’s license, and 3663 – to update the data. Out of 3408 applications, more than 2,600 diplomas have already been printed by the Greek police.

How it’s done

Citizens enter the electronic application of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport https://drivers-vehicles.services.gov.gr with Taxisnet codes. The application is digitally registered and the necessary documents, including a photo and their signature, are paid the appropriate fee.

The aforementioned services then again digitally send all files, without the need for an individual to be present, to the Passport and Security Documents Directorate of the Greek Police Headquarters (AEA).

The necessary links between state registers for user authentication and data retrieval were implemented through the Interaction Center of the General Secretariat of Public Administration Information Systems.

After completing the necessary procedures, citizens can receive a new form of identification in person or through an authorized person, or make a request to send a document by courier to the regions where this service is supported.
