Monument to Russian consul destroyed in North Macedonia

In Bitola Park (North Macedonia FYROM), unknown vandals destroyed the Russian Cross monument, erected in honor of the Russian Imperial Consul Alexander Rostkovsky. Reported by the local edition “Independent Vesnik”

Unknown persons broke several granite slabs, which are part of the monument, and also damaged the stairs. After the incident, residents of the city called on the police to increase surveillance in the park and on the waterfront.

The “Russian cross” was erected by local residents in August 2003 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the consul’s death. He worked in Bitola from 1901 to 1903.

The publication reports that such destructive behavior of groups and individuals in Bitola is becoming more frequent, and the monument “Italian soldiers on the Macedonian front of 1916-1918”, located just a few meters from the Russian Cross, becomes the target of attacks several times a year.

Very often vandals attack monuments to national heroes and fighters of the National Liberation War, because just a few weeks ago, marble slabs and busts in the park were spray-painted.
