China: two major earthquakes in less than a day

Early this morning, China was rocked by tremors measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to the China Seismological Center. The second earthquake was recorded only a few hours after the powerful first one, which occurred at 21:48 on Friday.

The earthquake struck at 02:04 on the night from Friday to Saturday, in the northwestern Chinese province of Qinghai, 400 kilometers southwest of Xinjiang. The US Geological Survey has lowered its original value from 7.4 to 7.3 points. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 17 kilometers. Qinghai Province is one of the most densely populated in China. So far, there have been no reports of casualties or destructions. The power of the aftershocks was also felt by the inhabitants of India and Myanmar.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), as a result of the first earthquake in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan, three people were killed, 17 were injured, more than 30 people were removed from the wreckage, 20 thousand residents were evacuated from the damaged areas, where half a thousand rescuers were sent.

The Sina portal informs that more than 20 powerful tremors were recorded in the region over an hour and a half, the strongest – with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was 8 to 10 km deep and was located 35 km west of the city of Dali.
