The firefighting battle is coordinated by the chief of the fire department

The actions of firefighters to contain the fire that broke out last night in Schinose, coordinated by the chief of the fire department, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokuris. From the first hours at the scene was his deputy, Lieutenant General Yakovos Kleftospyros.

The battle with fire continues, APE-MPE reports. As a precaution, Alepochori was evacuated in the morning. The situation for those living there is complicated by heavy smoke. During the night, Shinos, Vamvakies, Agia Sotira, Paraskeva, Mazi, Mavrolimni, the monasteries of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Ioannis were evacuated.

According to the fire service, 17 planes constantly dropping water and an unprecedented number of ground forces were involved in extinguishing the fire. The fire no longer goes on like a wall, it is divided into scattered sections, however, experts fear a worsening of the situation by noon. Because of this, a titanic effort is being made to reduce the fire during the remaining critical hours.

The actions are coordinated from the air by two helicopters – a Greek helicopter, on which Vasilis Papageorgiou, Secretary General of Civil Protection, arrived, and a US Army helicopter. Vasilis Vartakogiannis, a representative of the fire brigade, says that due to the strong wind and the presence of dense vegetation, the fire has taken on such a scale. In the morning, when the planes were connected, the situation improved somewhat, but remains dangerous.

Many houses have been damaged in the area, but most of them are summer residences, and there are no residents in them now. The final damage will be assessed after the fire has been extinguished. The power grid was also damaged, as many of the supports were burnt out. A group from the Arson Control Department went to the scene of the fire on the orders of the chief of the fire brigade to investigate the causes of the fire.
